Silence at home as ITU marks Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day
Published:Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day is marked in Israel and by Jewish communities around the world in memory of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. The traditional two-minute silence will be a very different affair with much of the world living and working under confinement at home, but the day offers a much-needed opportunity to reflect on the continued importance of Holocaust education.
In advance of this year’s Holocaust Day, ETUCE member organisation the Israel Teachers’ Union (ITU) has invited colleagues to observe a two-minute silence at 11.00 (10.00 CET) on Tuesday 21 April.
ITU also recalls the international conference on Holocaust education held in January 2020, which explored “challenges in Holocaust education, best practice from the field as presented by teachers, and future dilemmas in Holocaust teaching in a changing world”. ETUCE’s European Director, Susan Flocken, spoke at the event, held in Krakow in conjunction with the official commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
