The ETUCE Standing Committee for Equality is a consultative body to the ETUCE Committee. It seeks to move forward the priorities and recommendations on equal opportunities set out in the ETUCE Work Programme. It also puts forward recommendations about priority themes and working methods regarding equal opportunities in education, the teaching profession and teacher unions.

ETUCE is committed to strengthen the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people. In particular, ETUCE combats homophobia and transphobia in the education sector; that is at school, in education institutions and universities, and supports its member organisation in their activities in this field. As a trade union confederation, ETUCE focuses on supporting education staff.
Homophobic bullying and harassment occurs every day within society: in the streets, at work, in the media and in political life and targets individual children and adults on the basis of their perceived or actual sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. It is in this context that education institutions should reinforce their efforts to create safe working environments where education staff can work and students can learn in an atmosphere of respect.
Education institutions must not only reflect but even celebrate society's diversity. Education staff and other members of education institutions communities need to learn from each other. This can be done by improving the contents of curricula and textbooks, removing embedded gender and other stereotypes, and also through social events and improving organisational structures of education institutions .
At world level, ETUCE's global umbrella organisation, Education International, works for the rights of its gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members. It is now working with its partners and member organisations on formulating recommendations and policies on the subject. An overview of Education International's activities can be found here.
